How do people deal with their boyfriends or husbands leaving for months at a time?

My soon to be husband is a merchant marine and he leaves for four months at a time. It is getting harder and harder for me. I need suggestions. Please help me.How do people deal with their boyfriends or husbands leaving for months at a time?
That sounds so tough. I haven't had to deal with anyone leaving for that long at a time. I hope you get to talk to him once in awhile? Or email or something. Anyway, here are some suggestions:


-Start a project that has to be done before he gets back, like rearranging your photos, painting the bathroom, etc. to distract yourself


-Volunteer somewhere or start helping other people out so that you feel you have meaning in your life


-Get him to wear a shirt for a few nights so it smells like him after he's gone


-After he leaves and before he comes back, give yourself a few weeks to pamper yourself-I mean, not to take time off work if you work, but one night do your nails, then get a facial, have a long bath, wax your legs (that takes me forever), get your hair done, etc. Do everything possible to take care of yourself and make yourself feel like a priority.


-Start a project to surprise him with when he gets home. Write him a letter each day, take a pic of yourself each day and put together a photo album for him, something like that.


-Find something you really enjoy but don't do much when he's around. When I'm alone, I dance like crazy and sing really loud, and I would never do it when anyone else was around, because I'm sure I'd look like an idiot. Let loose.

Takes a special kind of person to be able to do that and if you are having doubts then don't get married until you are sure you can do it. I have worked overseas on and off for years and have not found anyone that can deal with it - come home every 3 or 4 months. It is possible for you to Get a job working for companies that are overseas now if you are the adventurous type and you could time your trips home to coincide with his. Would be a great way to build up your bank accounts until both of you are ready to chill.
Replace them.
Replace him with some one else until he comes back.
